About Us
Miranda and I noticed the space that would become Cortelyou Music & Play for rent while at the tot lot across the street with our two-year-old daughter, Emma. It planted a seed in our minds. We saw more than just a storefront, we saw a chance to merge our backgrounds in music education and early childhood education into a dream for our family and yours.
We envisioned a neighborhood hub for children and families rooted in developmental play that grows alongside our own children. Our space features a music teaching studio for local artists, a social play environment carefully designed for the unique milestones of our two-year-old daughter, Emma, and a musical sensory zone tailored for the earliest stages of infancy with our second baby (due very soon!) in mind. We aren't just opening a business; we're building a community space for our own kids to share with yours, right here in Ditmas Park. Whether you're here for a first piano lesson or a morning of intentional toddler discovery, we're so excited to welcome you into the family.
What makes Cortelyou Music & Play different?
Cortelyou Music & Play is a local mom & pop owned and operated community music school and play space. Almost all of our teaching partners live in the immediately surrounding neighborhoods and several grew up here! We believe in treating teachers fairly, which includes letting our teaching partners set their own rates and make-up policies.
The first thing you'll notice about taking lessons at Cortelyou Music & Play is that it's inviting, spacious, and full of natural light. Unlike the typical music school where you and your teacher have to cram yourselves into a depressingly tiny, windowless box. Another sad reality is that most music schools take an unfair cut (more than 50%) of lesson fees. In most cases, we don't take a cut at all, Cortelyou Music & Play is different.
